In 1999, The Maurice English Poetry Award sponsored a workshop and reading at The Curtis Insti­tute of Music, Philadelphia. Guest Poet: Gregory Djanikian. In addition, a writing contest for citywide high school students for works about Philadelphia was sponsored by the Maurice English Poetry Award as part of the celebration of Philadelphia writers organized by The Penn Humanities Forum of the University of Pennsylvania.
